Update - as of 11/16/23, all Maine Coon cats have been adopted!
The cat’s out of the bag! We will be receiving Maine Coon cats that were involved in a rescue situation from the Human Society of the United States within the next week. These cats have been through hell and back. The HSUS has done an amazing job trying to get these cats in a condition in which they can be transferred and eventually adopted. We will only have a very small number of cats for adoption, most likely 10 cats or less. Once we receive the cats, there will be a minimum two-week quarantine required for the kitties. Once they are cleared for adoption, we will post them to our website and social media outlets.
Things to know, first, this breed of cat is known to have many health issues. The most serious are heart and dental related but they don’t end there. We are not receiving any cats with identified heart issues but that does not mean that they won’t present with these issues later. Many of these cats have grade 1 and 2 dental, Corona Virus, Tritrichomonas,Giardia, Chlostridium, Ringworm, cuts, and scrapes. Most, if not all are being treated for communicable diseases at a minimum.
This breed is known for hereditary conditions that are heart, dental and kidney related. We have developed a guide that we will link to this post as a resource if you are interested in adopting a Maine Coon cat. Our contract will include the following agreement: “I understand that Maine Coon cats may have genetic conditions that can be very expensive to treat. I will be responsible for any treatment cost for this cat after the adoption. I do not hold Cat's Cradle of the Shenandoah Valley, Inc. responsible for any hereditary, congenital, or communicable diseases or conditions that my Maine Coon may present”.
Please do your research before applying for adoption. As we said earlier, these cats have been through a lot. We don’t want you to adopt a cat and then not be able to afford the care that is required for this breed. Just a reality check: A cardio consult with a specialty veterinarian starts at $800 to just walk through the door, internal medicine consults range from $1,000 - $1,500 with follow up appointments around $600. Dentals range from $400 to $1,000 at a general veterinarian practice. We don’t want to scare you, but we want everyone that is thinking of adopting this breed of cat to know what you are getting in to prior to adoption. These cats don’t come with “papers” and who knows about inbreeding…just sayin.
I don’t want to sound like a Debbie Downer about these cats. But we bear a lot of responsibility in finding the right home for these cats. They have lived in horrible conditions and did not have the care that they needed until rescued by HSUS. Our goal is to be very transparent about the condition of these cats. We will be asking uncomfortable questions such as if there are possible issues that arise with the cat you want to adopt, are you in a position to spend thousands of dollars in medical care for this cat. We feel that asking the uncomfortable questions up front will save us all heartbreak in the end.
Anyone who is interested in one of these kitties must fill out an adoption application. The adoption fee is $200. Our adoption team will go through every application. As we have many more applications than kitties, please take look at our other kitties that are available for adoption. Our site updates daily as we get new kitties coming out of quarantine daily and others that get adopted and come off the site. Our local shelters are very full right now and we partner with them by pulling cats from them and putting them into our foster network. They might not be a Maine Coon kitty, but we know they will provide you with love and companionship and are just hoping for the same!
Thank you all for your outpouring of love and support for these and all of our incredible cats! You are what makes our lifesaving mission such a success! We will continue to post updates as we have them available.
